the problem with formula1

With the new rule changes in formula1, where there is a hybrid deployment of power not just from the fuel unit but also the battery unit, it presents a challenge not just for the drivers but also for the audience.

The FIA wanted to increase the spectacle of Formula 1 by inducing overtakes throughout the race, assuming that it would make the race interesting for audiences. Earlier, before this era, races used to happen as a procession. Once the fastest car got ahead of everyone, the race would typically be a procession or a train of the sequence of cars as has been established by their inherent speed and slightly by the driver's skill.

Therefore, the tyre-changing principle was adopted, which gave a legitimate reason to slow down the cars and induce a change in the order, which would increase or make the spectacle more entertaining.

In the case of the tyre changes had a great advantage with respect to spectacle compared to the present day battery discharges. The tyres were easy to comprehend when they lost their grip. You could make very simple graphics which showed the age of the tyre, and the consequences of the tyre's age would lead to a blowout, which was also a good spectacle.

But in the case of the battery discharges, although it's a very clever solution, the audience is just unaware of when the batteries are getting discharged. If the culprit of the discharge is the engineering team, the driver, or just the limitations of the car, it is unclear.

Until last year, George Russell was expected to be the leading Mercedes driver, but now, with his shortcomings and the consistent success of Kimi Antonelli, it is unclear if it is George's driving style, any shortcomings in the car itself, or any specialties that Kimi is doing to drive that car better.

So this ambiguity does not bode well for Formula 1, where a viewer cannot imagine themselves driving as any of the drivers. Earlier, when Hamilton or Max were winning the races, one would assume that you needed to have skills to at least get a seat in the fastest manufactured car. You were still expected to drive it the fastest way possible, which was shown by Hamilton vs. Bottas or Verstappen vs. any of his team-mates.

Although the battery discharge idea is interesting, it discharging multiple times over one lap is not the correct answer. It would be better if the battery also discharged once or twice over the entire race, much similar to the tyres. That way, you would have two controllable yet unpredictable specific reasons why the procession of cars would reshuffle themselves. This will allow the audience also to be cognizant of when the cars are in trouble or when the drivers are being weak in their decision-making.

So my suggestion to Formula 1 is to increase the battery capacities such that they don't discharge every lap but discharge every 10 or 20 laps. Thanks for attending my TED talk.
